Hooji won Best Short Film - Jury Award & Best Director Award in the 9th Season of MP Film Award Marcello Quintella e Boynard Director, Writer & Producer of the Film Hooji agree to interview with us.
Marcello Quintella e Boynard, brazilian screenwriter, directed his first short film in 2010, "Besieged" (Sitiados), that was selected in nearly 50 film festivals around the world and won two best movie prizes, including the audience award winner in the Can-Con Movie Festival - CortoTokio 2010. In 2011, he created his own company, Fata Morgana Filmes, with which produced "Hooji", short film that was selected in film festivals in over 40 countries and received, until now, 60 awards. “The name of the day” (O Nome do Dia), his third film, received 55 awards. “Afterwards” (Depois) is his fourth short film and won, until now, 28 awards. The last three shorts where selected in about 310 fim festivals.
Abot the Film: Synopsis: Hooji Film Synopsis:
The day of a widow preparing the buddhist celebration for her husband's soul - the "hooji". She's waiting for her daughter and son, until a mysterious phone call changes everything. A tale about missing, loneliness and hope. Freely inspired on the death haiku by the japanese poet UmezawaBokusui (1875-1914).
What was your drive behind making this film?
Marcello Quintella e Boynard: I was with a theme in my mind, talk about lonileness and mourning. The budista ceremony of “hooji” inspired me to create the ambience and the narrative that I needed.
How you feel when you are awarded with the MP FILM AWARD Award?
Marcello Quintella e Boynard: I felt so glad and happy. This film is very special to me, because I developed a way to tell a story that is almost my signature.
Can you tell us about the greatest moment during shooting this film?
Marcello Quintella e Boynard: All the moments were magical. The artists and the crew members felt a very strong connection with the Project.
How rigorously did you stick to the script while shooting?
Marcello Quintella e Boynard: The script wasn’t change a lot during the shooting, because the narrative concept was very hardly thinked. But, how I said above, all the artists and the crew members, because they were very involved in every aspect of the film, gave important contributions to the movie finish like it is.
Where there any on set problems During the filming of the film & how did you deal with it?
Marcello Quintella e Boynard: The set was very very peaceful. The problems were the usual, like to respect the daily shooting schedule, despite some very graphically elaborated scenes.
Do you have any advice for young filmmaker out there? Or like yourself?
Marcello Quintella e Boynard: Read, listen, study, create a good basis to learn film making. After, find your personal way to do it, discover your cinema language to do something really special.
Do you think it is essential to go to a film institute in order to become a successful filmmaker?
Marcello Quintella e Boynard: No, exactly. The most important is to be a good movie buff, see all the films that you can see, whatever the genre. Like Tarantino.
Which film has inspired you the most?
Marcello Quintella e Boynard: Is very difficult to express all my inspirational bagagem in just a title.But I like Truffaut’s “Les 400 Coups”, Almodóvar’s “All About my Mother” and Ozu’s “Father and Daughter”. I like films that treat the human soul and its deep feelings.
Which particular film maker has influenced you the most?
Marcello Quintella e Boynard: François Truffaut.
Which book would you love to make a film out of one day?
Marcello Quintella e Boynard: I word with original screenplays and I don’t have the intention to film some adaptation.
If you got the opportunity to go back in time & change something in any particular movie of yours, then which movie & what changes will you opt for?
Marcello Quintella e Boynard: Thanks for the question. I wouldn't change anything. Every movie, even with its flaws, expresses who I was at the time.If I can’t change me in the past, I can’t change what I did.
If you were to shoot the film again, what would you do differently?
Marcello Quintella e Boynard: Nothing, really. I assume and respect my mistakes.

Marcello Quintella e Boynard: Be an movie maker in Brazil. It isn’teasy...
How do you pick yourself up after a failed film?
Marcello Quintella e Boynard: I do anotherone. Just it.
